On 9 October, silver medal of the 29th Olympic Games in Beijing was awarded to the Lithuanian wrestler Mindaugas Mizgaitis at the celebratory ceremony held in the Palace of the Grand Dukes in Vilnius.
In 2008 in Beijing, the Lithuanian athlete won a bronze medal; however, the International Olympic Committee disqualified the Russian silver medallist Khasan Baroev for the violation of the Anti-Doping Rules and the Lithuanian wrestler became the runner-up.
Pursuant to a decision of the International Olympic Committee, an official medal ceremony has to be held for athletes affected by unfair acts of competitors and, therefore, winning medals of a higher grade.
During the celebration that took place in the Palace of the Grand Dukes, Mr. Mizgaitis accepted the silver medal from the President of the International Olympic Committee Thomas Bach. The ceremony was also attended by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Lithuania Saulius Skvernelis and the President of the National Olympic Committee of Lithuania Daina Gudzinevičiūtė. The Olympic medallist was honoured with the Olympic Anthem and National Anthem of Lithuania.
