Lithuania in the Olympic Festival
In Azerbaijan, Lithuania was represented by 67 athletes. They competed in cycling, gymnastics, wrestling, track and field athletics, swimming, judo, and tennis events. During the Opening ceremony, the Lithuania national flag was carried by shot putter Karolis Gelažius.
Lithuania’s only medal medal was won by the 14-year-old tennis player Vilius Gaubas who became the vice-champion. He ranked 2nd in the boys’ tournament. The tennis player also carried the Lithuanian national flag during the Closing ceremony.
Swimmer Aleksas Savickis was also close to climbing the victory podium: the 16-year-old athlete from Panevėžys was 4th in the 200 m breaststroke event and 7th in the 100 m breaststroke event. Other swimmers also performed well: both individual and Lithuania’s records were reached.
Cyclist Gustė Stanišauskautė was 12th among 75 participants in the individual race.
Boys’ U16 basketball team was 5th.
Mykolas Alekna, the son of the 2-times Olympic champion Virgilijus Alekna, competed in the discus throwing finals and placed 9th.
